Loch Lomond has always had a tradition of boating,
the Loch has been used by people wanting to enjoy
the area from the water, for many years. The first
commercial pleasure steamer was brought into
services in 1827. The first regatta to take place
was in 1827. Since then there has been a steady
increases in the numbers and type of craft using
the Loch for pleasure sport and recreation.

In
recent years a survey has indicated that
on a popular holiday weekend there can be
as many as 800 boats on the Loch at any
one time. The pattern and usage of Loch
Lomond has been changing over the past few
years. It has been recognized in most recent
years that there are less cruisers moored
in "the narrows" and more dayboats
and jetbikes. As dayboaters tend to camp
or barbeque on the islands and beaches this
has also led to an increase in pressure
on the enviroment such as rubish being left
on the islands.
On
busy days some of the slipways may close
for short time or have long waiting lines
of cars and boats waiting to slip.

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park
Authority has a Country Side Ranger Service
which offers assistance to visitors and local
communities alike. To achieve this they spend
as much time as possible out and about on
a regular basis. Since the introduction of
the Byelaws the have severals boats staffed
by the Ranger Services to ensure that all
watercraft operate in a responsible and safe
manner whilst adhering to the Byelaws. In
April 2010 four of the Rangers were made Special
Police Constables to assist with thier duties.
